In Service of Others: Immersions to Elevate

We were privileged to work with an esteemed client who had been focusing on how best to use their position and resources to better support their people, their business, and their communities. How might Immersion be used to elevate these insights?

The Client – A Leading, Non-Profit, Healthcare Organization System Committed To Delivering Compassionate, Personalized Care To All

Our client is one of the US’s leading non-profit and Catholic health systems. With a special attention to persons living in poverty and those most vulnerable, they have invested in people and technology to enhance the delivery of healthcare toward uplifting communities.

The Challenge

Our Immersion was set to take place not only within an existing learning & development program, but also as a follow-on to a powerful experience in which participants were focused on healthcare disparity and unmet needs. As such, it was incumbent upon us to envision a design that unlocked practical and engaging business insight, while being deeply connected to a strong sense of purpose and social innovation. To accomplish this, we set out for the birthplace of technological innovation: Silicon Valley.

What We Did

We designed a day of in-person immersion sessions built around three themes, which summate to an applied perspective of how one might envision addressing healthcare needs to support symbiotic business-community growth.
The participants were split into four teams and the day was divided into a morning meeting, a working lunch, and an afternoon meeting. Organizations and exemplars were chosen because they had been recognized for their focus on innovation and agility, as well as their capacity to realize a vision of supporting some of the most vulnerable populations.

The Immersion Learning Experience

Meeting 1:A Relentless Focus on the Consumer’ – These meetings were centered around high-impact innovation and agility. The intent was to learn from highly capable organizations who connect deeply with their consumers to provide cutting edge solutions.

Meeting 2:Inspiring Change’ – These meetings were centered around living and working with passion. We crafted these meetings to uncover the opportunities and challenges of having purpose driven business, and how this plays out in the constraint-laden world of the underserved.

Meeting 3:Innovation Enabling Change’ – These meetings were centered around how successful organizations have been capitalizing on innovation to enact meaningful change within local and global communities. In these meetings, we saw how courageous leadership and tactical business insight was able to ‘move the needle’ in powerful and surprising ways.

The Impact

This Immersion experience proved to be an eye-opening and emotional experience. Our Immersion hosts were forthcoming not only in sharing their victories, but also some of the hardships of the spaces they work in. These conversations were grounding for our client, whose participants expressed a re-invigoration for their own work and the challenges they had yet to face.
Silicon Valley has continually shown itself to be a utopia for innovation. Yet this Immersion highlighted the heartbeat which lies beneath to support such continual growth. Our Immersion participants were quick to identify the strong interplay of communication, purpose-driven work, and the investment in people as key enablers to delivering on mission-critical objectives. These insights were unanimously agreed upon as being urgent action items as the Immersion experience came to a close.
